A Little Bit Of Culture

Today was such a bleak day…  We already had it planned and what a good way to spend a rainy day.

First port of call the Gallery Café.  Cappuccino for me, chai latte for my most wonderful friend Susan.  And… a sweet little plaited pastry topped with pecans for us both.

Then . . . to the gallery we must go, to the gallery we must go . . .

Quilting and patchwork – amazing!!!

The lighting however, left a lot to be desired.  Wanting to peer closely at tiny stitches and intricate embroidery was an impossible task.  Bed coverings and wall hangings - made so very long ago (1700 – 1945) alas, our eyesight just could not quite focus the right distance to fully appreciate the amazing work of those women who spent their ‘leisure time’ in such idyllic pursuits.

They all tell a story – some in pictures, some by the fabric and technique.  An insight into the plight of many and how they overcame adversity to piece together something of beauty, of usefulness, of ornamental value.  Off-cuts from old clothes, blackout curtains, scraps salvaged in everyday life.

Then those of brilliant ribbons, brocade and silk used by the ‘ladies’ of the day.

We were inspired by the colours, textures and intricacies of these beautiful pieces of history.

Then for something different …

Aboriginal art – so wonderful in its fullness.  So telling in its honesty.

We meandered through the rooms, taking in the diversity of these artworks.  Paintings, photography, wood block printing, bark, sand and wood, sand and wood… and pattern upon pattern, weaving through an elaborate and moving story of survival, of growth, of pain and love.

Susan amused me without even knowing it :)

The Pop-up shop an interesting visit too…
Although, we neither bought a thing.

Then onward, home bound but first a little stop.

Vietnamese fare – Susan’s favourite me thinkst… Satay chicken, vegies and rice, such a yummy treat.  It was so good, it warmed our bodies and filled our empty bellies til they almost exploded, well that’s how mine felt anyway.

Home then, a little lay down to rest our weary selves.

What a day we’ve had, enjoying some time out of the rain, viewing the world from an ancient and historic perspective, a fun day of friendship and a little bit of culture too!
